Basement Blues

A 14 track alternative rap/hip-hop album (50m 12s) — released June 20th 2005 on Altered Vibes

Born out of a scene that spawned the likes of Massive Attack, Krust and Roni Size, Bristol dwelling producer Ben Dubuisson has never been short of inspiration and stimulus in his home town. Ben began his musical path in the height of the 'beats' scene, cutting his teeth with seminal labels like Hombre and Cup Of Tea recordings. A decade later and Dubuisson returns in his brand spanking new Hundred Strong get up, melding hip hop with funk, jazz, soul and a touch of dub reggae. The result is his debut long player for Altered Vibes, 'Basement Blues'. As you would expect from a producer of his pedigree, Ben has made plenty of friends along the way, and when favours were called in and musical exchanges made, he found himself with a seemingly in-exhaustive wealth of vocal talent to use and abuse on the album. Label mates, and unorthodox hip hop pairing, Def Harmonic were obvious choices to guest on the LP. The duo appear on the cosmic 'Mostly Empty Solid Space' and percussive 'Brain Busy', whilst individually, Lunaversol9 lends her effortless, silky vocals to the dub tinged 'Flavor' and Jason Todd adds fuel to the funk fire of forthcoming single, 'Hardcore Poetry'. Elsewhere, Ben also finds stateside vocal skills in the shape of rising star Alison Crockett, on the angst ridden soul cut, 'Dream On Delay', and a little bit of Celtic magic on two tracks from Compost recordings superstar Joseph Malik. East London singer/songwriter, Victor Davies also drops lyrics on the string laiden 'Lead Not Follow', and UK hip hop stalwarts Chester P and Farma G (A.K.A. Task Force) plus hotly tipped female lyricist EV.ON (collaborator with the likes of The Herbaliser and Lyric L) also make themselves heard from this side of the pond. Vocalists aside, just check the quality of Ben's beats, the slickness of his sampling skills and the polish of his production that makes 'Basement Blues' a hip hop LP with soul and a whole lot more!'

"B boy busted-up bluesology for the 05 from the Bristolian beatphreaks A Hundred Strong, lifted from the forthcoming album that's equally as addictive and full of big name guests like Victor Davies, Joseph Malik and Alison Crockett. Its all about the beats, the rhymes and the blues intertwined as we go back to the source to reference the future: this little seven inches of pleasure rocks hard every time in vocal or instrumental form. Check it. 5/5 CG" - IDJ Magazine
